About Waldorf-Steiner Education

“All of my instructionally related research into childhood has pointed toward the superiority of Waldorf education over all other current educational methods.”

Jane W. Hipolito, Professor Emeritus of English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics

Steiner Waldorf education is the largest and fastest-growing Independent School system in the world with more than 1,100 schools worldwide, including 27 in the UK and Ireland. It’s part of state-funded mainstream education provision in most European countries and in Australia and New Zealand.

The first school opened in Germany in 1919 while in the UK we opened our doors in 1925 with the Michael Hall school in Sussex. Our York school was founded 40 years ago.

Our distinctive non-denominational curriculum fosters a lifelong love of learning based on a deep understanding of the needs of each child where the whole school community works (and plays!) together. We have a strong academic core, with expert teachers delivering in-depth science, maths, literacy and language learning but this is done in a way that captures imaginations and becomes a lifelong interest in the world around us.

Steiner Education:

  • Works for all children, irrespective of academic ability, class, ethnicity or religion and embraces the Whole Child – academic, physical, emotional and spiritual.
  • It’s based on an understanding of the different phases of child development to build a love of learning and enthusiasm for school.
  • We see artistic activity and the development of the imagination as integral to learning
  • Steiner education is tried and tested and respected worldwide for producing very able, confident young people who have a strong sense of self and diverse capabilities to help them become socially and economically responsible.

In line with other UK Steiner Schools we follow ten fundamental principles of education which you can see here.

“When approached by the news media and asked the question, ‘What did Waldorf education do for you?’ I replied, ‘It encouraged me to always strive to become a better human being.”

Jens Stoltenberg: Former Prime Minister of Norway and Secretary General of NATO
