All set for Candlemas

Weeks of planning have gone into one of our most loved Festivals which runs this Thursday. Candlemas celebrates the first day of spring – a cheerful time when new life is beginning to stir.

At school, parents teachers and children meet in the early morning as the sky begins to brighten, to sing and make candles in the earth while everyone shares breakfast and hot drinks afterwards.

Welcoming one of our famous parents!

We have many well-known parents and former pupils who have gone on to achieve great success in the world with many becoming household names.

One of the best loved lights of children’s theatre, Mike Kenny, who has won multiple awards for his productions, also happens to have sent his three sons to our school and directed many of our epic plays. This week he dropped in to chat to Class 8 about their forthcoming version of his Olivier Award-winning production of ‘The Railway Children’ which began in York and toured widely across the world.

“I sometimes think the Steiner School plays were the best productions I ever did!” he said.

“I think this is because movement, creativity, imagination and the arts are not extras at a Steiner School, they are the way we teach all subjects…”

The biggest Family Christmas Fair in York?

With just under 60 craft stalls, this year’s Advent Fair looks set to break all our previous records and we are expecting well over 2,000 visitors. We’ve just set up our early booking site for the Secret Grotto – this always sells out – and we have a bumper number of wonderful prizes – from holidays to wellbeing sessions – in our Silent Auction and Raffles. See you on Saturday (Nov 19) at 10am! (Check our Facebook pages for all the latest info.)

Saddling up for another magnificent WOW bike ride!

Once again our epic whole school WOW ride to Selby (via the Sustrans’ Solar System trail) has hit the headlines as we believe we are the only school in the UK where every child takes part in a mass ride of this kind. The WOW (Waldorf One World) charity is supported by Steiner schools across the world and all money raised goes directly to support children in underprivileged countries.

Maple Tree open for business!

We’re delighted to launch Maple Tree today, our fourth Kindergarten, to help us keep up with the many new children we are welcoming to the school this year. Another special welcome to the 19 children who join our Main School today and we are preparing for even more new faces over the next few weeks.

A joyful end of term – and emotional goodbyes

What a hectic, fantastic, exciting and emotional last week of school. Alongside lessons, the children also packed in concerts, plays and day trips with the joy of welcoming our new Class 1 children to the main school at our beautiful Jump the Rope ceremony and the sadness of losing our magnificent Class 8s who left the other way….

More painful goodbyes to treasured members of staff; Antje Ramming-Robinson and Annabel Gibb who will be missed very much indeed.

Olympic Medallists!

Class 5 are just back from four days of sports challenges at the annual Steiner Olympic Games – where 24 schools across the UK got together at the beautiful Michael Hall school in East Sussex. “It’s a beautiful experience – the children come back from the Olympiad ten feet taller,” said one parent.

School trips – at opposite ends of the country!

Our young adventurers from Classes 6 and 8 are midway through epic travels – the former are exploring the roman history of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland while the latter are camping in Devon and Cornwall! Glorious weather accompanies our children, staff and parents who will be full of stories to share when they return at the end of the week.

Don’t miss Class 8’s epic play: Tickets on sale now!

Months of rehearsals are finally coming to an end as we get set for the show of the century: Class 8’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” With tickets starting from just £3 we anticipate a sell-out show! You can get your tickets on Eventbrite now!

School Council now in session!

Giving our children a voice and encouraging them to share their views is a key part of Steiner Education so we are delighted to welcome our new School Council this month. Made up of children from Classes 5,6,7 and 8, one of the group’s first jobs will be helping to interview candidates for the new Head Teacher role!
