Advent Fair

The Advent Fair at York Steiner School is one of the school's biggest community events of the year. It is much more than a Christmas market. It is a celebration of the start of Advent and brings together pupils, parents, staff, alumni, local businesses, and the wider York community. It is also one of the school's most important annual fundraisers.

You can typically expect:

  • A large craft market featuring handmade gifts, artwork, toys, candles, ceramics, jewellery, and seasonal decorations.

  • Children's activities including traditional games, craft making, puppet shows, fairy themed experiences, and festive workshops.

  • Several cafés serving homemade soups, cakes, lunches, mulled drinks, and festive treats.

  • Live music, singing, and seasonal performances by members of the school community.

  • Raffles and fundraising stalls.

  • A warm, community atmosphere that reflects Steiner values of creativity, craftsmanship, and togetherness rather than a commercial Christmas event.

Why is it such a big deal?

For York Steiner School, the Advent Fair is a huge community effort. Every class and almost every family helps in some way. Parents volunteer before and during the event, whether that's baking, crafting, decorating, building attractions, running stalls, or helping in the cafés.
