Kindergarten
Ages 3-6 • Early Years Funding Available
The work of childhood is play
Childhood is a precious time, full of joy and wonder. Here, children have the time to play, and the richness of their imagination can come to life.
We hold the unique child at the heart of everything we do, through a gentle daily rhythm and a balance of self-initiated play and adult-led activities across the 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
A safe and nurturing home from home
Our kindergartens provide a beautiful, cosy environment. We provide simple, natural, eco-friendly play materials that nurture the child’s senses and stimulate creativity.
Play materials and toys are intentionally unformed, enabling a free flow of imaginative games and play themes: a large seaside shell can become a bowl, a boat or a telephone, a muslin cloth can act as a knight’s cloak, a bedcover or a roof for a house.
Through imaginative play they learn to solve problems, collaborate with others, negotiate, share and build lasting friendships.
Grounded confidence in every child
At York Steiner School we see each child as unique and celebrate their gifts. We support them in developing a love of learning and the will to keep going.
Preparing snacks, setting the table, caring for the classroom and tending the garden help children develop responsibility, practical skills and a sense of belonging.
“The kindergarten teachers went above and beyond to help our son feel secure and supported. Through their gentle care and warmth, he has blossomed into a confident and happy little boy. Now he skips to school with a smile.”
Education through a connection to the natural world
Learning in kindergarten is developed through a connection with the natural world. This is reflected in our nature tables, seasonal activities, festivals and songs, our observations of nature and nurturing of the senses. We spend time outdoors, caring for our garden and exploring the natural world.
Children are held through stable and predictable rhythms of the day, week and year. Rhythm creates a sense of safety, nurturing a grounded confidence in children, developing their resilience which supports learning and personal development.
