Middle Years Main School - Classes 6-8 (children ages 11-14)

In the Middle school years, the curriculum broadens to provide intellectual challenge,  deepening exploration of the natural and social sciences. Classes 6-8 explore themes of transformation and change, mirroring the emotional and physical changes that children navigate as they go through puberty and become young people.

A focus on independent learning introduces research skills, report writing and public presentation. Children take a greater responsibility for their learning, growing their confidence, creativity, critical thinking and teamwork. In preparation for Upper School, classes often welcome new students moving from homeschooling or an alternative primary setting.

CLASS 6

Ages 10-11

Children’s developing social awareness is supported in Class Six by a study of the Romans. Addressing the straight lines and structures at the root of European culture, opens conversations about positives and negatives in life and how perspectives differ according to context and over time. The themes of light and shadow and change over time runs throughout the year. Science focuses on the physics of heat and light, and geology, art lessons focus on charcoal and pastels. This is a watershed year, children are stretching wings and trying boundaries and they move into independence and responsibility.

“I researched a European country learning about its history. I also took part in the first ever Medieval Games at another Steiner School, where we learnt sword fighting and archery.”
