Awakening creativity, deepening understanding

The aim of the Steiner Waldorf curriculum in the Main School is to awaken children’s capacities for imagination, wonder and creativity. To light the fire of ‘enthusiastic’ learning, subjects are presented through narrative. Children meticulously document what they are learning in their lessons as subjects are presented as potent, interwoven and overlapping strands.

Each Class year has a purposefully crafted curriculum, as well as key milestone events and activities, to aid each child to reach their full potential for learning at each stage of child development.

Learning that comes alive

Learning in Main School is anything but ordinary.

Our curriculum brings subjects together through rich, immersive experiences that help children understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters. Rather than rushing from lesson to lesson, children spend focused time exploring topics in depth, making meaningful connections across science, history, mathematics, literature, geography and the arts.

Every day is balanced with creativity and movement. Music, painting, drama, handwork, woodwork, gardening and outdoor learning sit alongside academic subjects, nurturing confident thinkers who enjoy discovering the world around them.

Every child is truly known

We believe children flourish when they feel seen, understood and valued.

Our class teachers build lasting relationships with their pupils, getting to know each child as an individual. Small class sizes create a supportive environment where children feel confident to ask questions, take risks and celebrate one another's achievements.

Rather than measuring children against each other, we focus on personal growth, helping every child develop at their own pace while building resilience, independence and self belief.

This sense of belonging creates a classroom where children feel safe to be themselves and excited to learn every day.

Learning beyond the classroom

Some of the most memorable lessons happen far beyond four walls.

Whether exploring woodland, performing on stage, tending the school gardens, embarking on residential trips or celebrating seasonal festivals, children experience learning as something lived rather than simply taught.

These shared experiences build confidence, strengthen friendships and create lasting memories that become part of each child's journey through school.

Life at York Steiner School is filled with opportunities to discover new interests, develop practical skills and contribute to a vibrant school community.

Growing ready for what comes next

Education is about far more than preparing for exams.

Throughout Main School, children gradually develop the independence, critical thinking and emotional maturity needed for the challenges of adolescence and beyond. They learn to collaborate, communicate, solve problems creatively and approach the world with curiosity and compassion.

By the time they move into Upper School, our pupils are confident learners, ready to embrace greater challenges while remaining grounded, thoughtful and resilient.
